The airline was established in October 1999 and started operations on June 30, 2000, when it began scheduled passenger services between Jakarta and [[Pontianak, Indonesia|Pontianak]] using a leased [[Boeing 737-200]]. It is owned by Rusdi Kirana and family.<ref name="FI"/> The airline is also planning to become an [[IATA]] member, thereby becoming the second IATA [[Indonesia]]n carrier behind [[Garuda Indonesia]].

Starting February 2010, Lion Air will increase the number of flights to [[Jeddah]] to five times weekly. In October 2010, the average age of Lion Air's average fleet is 7.2 years.[2]

Throughout 2007 to 2012, 138 Boeing 737-900ERs will be delivered from the total 178 aircraft ordered to strengthen Lion Air's fleet. The 737-900ER is the newest member of the Next Generation 737 family. All other aircraft, including the Boeing 737 Classic family and the McDonnell Douglas/Boeing MD-80 family, are being phased out to make room for their new aircraft.
