"Statuarietto White Marble" - marble from the Tertiary of Italy.

In the commercial decorative stone trade, “marble” is used to refer to a wide variety of relatively soft rocks (H = 3 to 5) that will take a fine polish. These include true marbles and rocks that aren’t marbles, such as limestones, tectonic breccias, and serpentinites.

The true marbles are calcitic, crystalline-textured metamorphic rocks. They form by intermediate- to high-grade metamorphism of limestones. They have been used for millennia as building and monument stones (e.g., ancient Greek & Roman archaeological sites and Michelangelo’s sculptures).

"Statuarietto White Marble" is a finely-crystalline, white Italian marble with grayish wisps and mottling. The rock comes from the Apuan Marble Formation, which formed by Tertiary metamorphism of lowermost Jurassic limestones. The unit is exposed in the Apuan Alps of northern Italy. White Carrara Marble was used to make Michelangelo’s world-famous statue of David.

This material is also referred to as "Staturetto White Marble".

From Diemer et al. (2012) - Building Stone Walking Tour of Uptown Charlotte:

The light stone in the wall is a white marble (metamorphosed limestone) with gray veins. this stone was quarried in Carrara, Italy, as was the marble for Michelangelo's sculpture of the Pieta in St. Peters Cathedral in Rome and the David in Florence. The limestone protolith for the Carrara Marble is Jurassic in age. This parent rock was metamorphosed to marble during the poorly understood Tertiary uplift event in the Alpi Apuani Mountains, where Carrara is located.

Provenance: marble quarry near Carrara, Massa-Carrara Province, far-northwestern Tuscany, northern Italy.

Locality: wall at Duke Energy Center building, downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
